Betjeman’s Churches: Ashton

St John the Baptist, Ashton, Devon

Amid the wooded slopes of the Teign Valley, St John the Baptist is a church you could love for its setting alone. Inside, though, is fantastic array of craftsmanship: 15th-century Devon woodcarving, in part rustic (the wagon roof) and in part refined and delicate (the screen); excellent panel painting too – skilled, expressive and characterful, in contrast to the stylised cyphers often seen in religious paintings.
