Betjeman’s Best British Churches: Bottesford

Bottesford: St Mary the Virgin

Tomb of 5th Earl of Rutland and his wife Countess Elizabeth at Bottesford

The church is home to a superabundance of decorative tombs, beautifully crafted for the most part, and necessitating the rebuilding of the chancel in the 17th century to accommodate them. The altar has been lost to the congregation behind all this extravagance. Sixteenth and seventeenth-century grandeur at its most fascinating, where egotism is matched by humility.
