Betjeman’s Best British Churches: Altarnun

St Nonna, Altarnun, Cornwall

Cornish and Devon churches have, I think, some of the best wood carving in the country. Generally less refined than that in the East Anglian churches, Cornish wood carving is nevertheless sculpted with gusto and is full of character. Those qualities are very evident in this bench-end depicting a jester, which was carved in the 16th century by Robert Daye.
